FOOD ART
Dear students, the public have been doing many things on the internet to ease the boredom during lockdown. One of these things has been to recreate well known and well loved works of art, with fascinating results!
On the left is a self portrait by Frida Kahlo, on the right an image from the internet.
The public have improvised, and used whatever objects they had to hand.
On the left is a painting called girl with a pearl earring by Vermeer beside a very engaging portrait of a girl with her pet cat.
Another popular activity on the internet is recreating works of art in food.
Botticelli’s painting called birth of Venus, made with salad ingredients
A Frida Kahlo self portrait cream cheese on toast creation.
This is Rene Magritte’s painting ‘Son of Man’ in aubergine, apple, celery and lettuce.
This is a painting by Piet Mondrian recreated in Battenberg cake.
Munch’s painting ‘The Scream’ as a red onion, pepper and olive pizza.
KS3 HOME LEARNING MENU:
Individual work – no technology required
Create a piece of art, or recreate a piece of art using food or ingredients you have in the house. You can have more than one go. Many modern culinary creations by famous chefs are regarded by food critics as art because of the way they are plated. You could even use the juice from fruit or vegetables to paint with.
Here is an example of the art of food plating:
Family activity – ask the people in your house to try creating art on a plate, have an exhibition/critique session to discuss the results.
AND/OR
Create a favourite family dish (for example in my house we love spaghetti bolognaise); and try to plate the food in an artistic way. Do it the same on everyone’s plate – this is called consistency (this ability is essential for chefs working in high end restaurants – because the food isn’t just food it is a dramatic event, like going to a play or a gallery).
Technology activity
Search the internet for examples of life imitating art, or the art of plating food, or art made of food or all 3. Create a small presentation of your favourites.
If you have a camera/phone please photograph everything you make and send it to me:
Stay safe and happy creating!
