Independent (technology not needed)
Make an inventory of all of the food in your household. If you have a lot of food, pick a selection of things. List the ingredients and foods you find, organising them a table to record where they are stored. Please can you make a note of the packaging around each product, and note down the printed date – this should be either best before or use by. Here is an example started for you
Ambient temperature (stored in a cupboard or on a shelf).
1. Baked beans; in a tin; best before November 2022
2. Cornflakes; plastic packet inside cardboard box, best before June 2020
Chilled temperature (stored in a fridge at between 0-5 degrees Celsius).
1. Semi skimmed milk; plastic bottle; Use by 22 April 2020
2. Mince beef; sealed clear plastic; Use by 23 April 2020
Frozen (stored in a freezer at -18 degrees Celsius).
1. Beef burgers; sealed plastic inside cardboard; Best before March 2021
2. Garden peas; printed thick plastic bag; best before October 2021
Answer the following questions. If you are not sure ask someone in your household, and use your common sense. Please try to explain your answer in as much detail as you can, and think of an example to justify your answer.
1. Have you found any connection between best before foods and how/where they are stored?
2. Have you found anything out about use by foods –how/ where are they stored?
3. What is the difference between best before and use by?
4. Why do products that have been bought frozen have best before and not use by?
